EDIT ROYALE

On Thursday 3rd of August the ASE and Digistor hosted Edit Royale.

Edit Royale is a competition where five Editors have two hours to make a one-minute montage in front of a live audience. This is our sixth year running the event, and it was our biggest Royale yet. We sold out much earlier than expected and there was such high demand that we ended up opening up a new section to accommodate more people. All in, we had over 60 people attend on the night with many more viewing the live stream.

For those who would like to watch the competitors' videos or the event replay you can do so here:

Hosted by the delightful Kris Rowe and Riccy Felixburto ASE, the night was full of fierce competition as our five competitors Brianna Cook, John McGovarin, Mikey Burford, Natasha Alves, and Phill Wolf raced against the clock to make their edits. This year they each had a special theme to work off of: Story of Triumph, Obsession, Defiance, Self Discovery, and Loneliness. The quality of the cuts was astounding and each of our competitors should be proud of what they achieved under such tough circumstances.

There can however be only one winner and that honour went to Mikey Burford for his Story of Triumph. As part of his winners package Mikey won a one year subscription to Avid and Adobe Creative Cloud, with two tickets to this year's ASE Ellie Awards. Each competitor also walked away with a Davinci Resolve Speed Editor + Studio courtesy of Blackmagic Design plus a bunch of swag from Audio Network and Concord music.

But it was not just our competitors that took home prizes. This years lucky door prize pool totalled more than $10,000 worth of goods from our generous sponsors - they included:

  • EIZO  ColorEdge CG2700X 27.0" Colour Management LCD Monitor
  • Adobe Creative Cloud 1 year subscription
  • Avid Media Composer Ultimate 1 year subscription
  • DaVinci Resolve Studio plus a DaVinci Resolve Speed Editor
  • 12-month Maxon One subscription
  • Wacom Intuos Pro tablet
  • Logickeyboard custom keyboard for Media Composer, Premiere or Resolve (winner's choice)
  • a $250 Ticketek voucher alongside an Audio Network ‘Play It Back’pack, which consists of four Audio Network limited edition records
  • Two tickets to the 2023 Ellie Awards
  • Merch, vinyl, gig tickets courtesy of Concord Music Publishing

(Dany Cooper ASE with Kris Rowe.)

Topping this all off we had a wealth of entertainment offerings with talks from renowned feature film Editor Dany Cooper ASE, previous winner Dan Oates, discussion with last year's Emerging Editor winner, Oliver Dear, and Adobe's Jon Barrie, Tech talks from Digistor and Blackmagic Design, and music discussions with Emily Norton from Audio Network, and an update on all things ASE from our President Danielle Boesenberg.

Considering everything you get for your ticket (including an open bar and pizza), Edit Royale is fantastic value and a wonderful night where you get to catch up with old friends, meet new ones and celebrate all things editing.

I would like to thank Kris and Riccy for being our fabulous hosts, Sean Notley-Rumbens from Digistor and Harrison Green from Videocraft for the technical setup and vision switching, Adrian Barac for holding a very heavy camera all night, and Keaton Stewart for being our photographer.

I would also like to thank our generous sponsors for their support of the Royale including: Digistor, Adobe, Audio Network, Avid, Blackmagic Design, Concord Music, EIZO, Logic Keyboard, Maxon, Wacom and Videocraft.

(Mark Richards from Digistor.)

Finally a big thank you to Mark Richards and all the staff at Digistor for making this happen. We could not make this event as great as it is without your support. Each year the Royale gets bigger and bigger and that is no doubt due to your hard work and dedication. It has been a great pleasure and we all look forward to what new heights we can take it to next year.
