Karen Pearlman

BIO
Karen Pearlman, ASE, is a director of the multi-award winning Physical TV Company where she directs, produces and edits drama, documentary and dance film. Currently an Associate Professor in Screen Practice and Production at Macquarie University, Australia, Karen is a former President of the Australian Screen Editors Guild and a five-time nominee, and two-time winner for Best Editing at the Australian Screen Editors Guild Annual Awards.

Karen’s trilogy of short films about historical women editors (2016, 2018 & 2020) have won 34 highly competitive national and international awards from peak industry bodies and film festivals, including 3 for best editing, 3 for best directing and 6 for best documentary. In 2025 Karen’s film Breaking Plates was awarded ‘Best Short Documentary’ at the Antenna International Film Festival in Sydney.

Karen was accredited by the Australian Screen Editors Guild in 2024. She is the author of 'Cutting Rhythms, Creative Film Editing' (3rd edition, 2025), which has translations into Chinese, Korean, Turkish and Arabic.
