The ASE Emerging Editor Award aims to recognise new and emerging talent amongst our members. It is designed to acknowledge editors at the beginning of their career.
There are two awards: one for a student editor and one for an early career editor.
An editor can enter themselves or be entered by a colleague or peer. The colleague does not have to be a member, but the nominated editor must be.
Applications should include:
- Their latest CV or work history.
- An example of their work.
- A brief statement about the submitted work.
- A brief statement about their aspirations as an editor in the industry.
- A reference from a director, producer or editor they have worked with.
- A scanned copy of their Student ID (or equivalent) if entering as a Student.
- An audio file that demonstrates the pronunciation of the applicants name.
- Entry fee of $60 (incl. GST) for Early Career, or $33 (incl. GST) for Student.
Eligibility Criteria for Early Career & Student
- You can enter the same production into the Emerging Editor Award and the Ellie Awards, but if you are nominated for an Ellie, your Emerging Editor Application will be revoked.
- If no on-screen credit is available, a letter must be provided from the producer naming the sole editor of the work.
Early Career
- Early Career is for applicants who are working as an editor but haven’t been previously nominated for an Ellie Award or have won the Emerging Editor Award.
- They can supply either a single production or portfolio of work with a total combined maximum duration of 20 minutes.
- Entries must have had their first theatrical, festival, or online release between 1st August 2025 and 31st July 2026; if submitting a portfolio, at least one of the pieces in the portfolio must have been released within this timeframe.
- The work can be from any category or genre.
- The submission should demonstrate their capability as an editor, and so should represent only their best work.
- If the work is extracted or cutdown from a larger project, or a portfolio of work from multiple projects, please provide a brief explanation detailing this.
- Early Career Editors must be current Full financial members of the ASE.
Student
- Student category is for Editors who are studying media production at an Australian Institution.
- They will supply a single production only that was completed during the applicants period of study.
- The work must have been completed between 1st August 2025 and 31st July 2026
- The work can be from any category or genre.
- Student applicants do not supply a folio of work.
- Must provide a scanned copy of your student ID (or equivalent).
- The Student does not need to be a currently enrolled in a course at the time of applying for the award.
- Student Editors can be either Full, Associate or Student members of the ASE

To ensure the Applicant’s work is streamed at the highest quality and is broadly compatible across multiple devices – and therefore viewed under the best possible circumstances – the ASE recommends Vimeo.
Should the Applicant prefer, Dropbox and YouTube are also acceptable platforms.

How to apply for the ASE Emerging Editor Award
The deadline for applications is Sunday 9th August 2026. Submissions will not be accepted after this date.
It is the responsibility of the Applicant to provide web links and ensure that they play back without interruption. The link must remain active until judging is complete, on Sunday 11th of October 2026.
