On the evening of the 22nd of November, the SA chapter of the ASE joined forces with the ACS and ADG for a special Q&A screening of 'Good Luck To You, Leo Grande'. The film stars Emma Thompson and is the latest feature from SA filmmaking couple Sophie Hyde and Bryan Mason, with Sophie directing and Bryan both shooting and editing.
The film has gained widespread acclaim, premiering at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival and with recent nominations at the British Independent Film awards for Best Independent Film, Best Direction, Best Joint Lead Performance and Best Screenplay. Locally, Sophie was nominated for Best Direction in a Feature Film at the ADG awards while Bryan received a feature Ellie nomination as well as taking out a Gold Award at the WA/SA ACS Awards.
Set for the most part in one location, a hotel room, and with just two main cast, the making of the film was further complicated by shooting in the UK during the height of COVID. Following the screening, a generous amount of time for Q&A gave a great insight into how Sophie and Bryan work together, taking the film from script to set and through the edit.

The ASE thank Bryan and Sophie for taking the time to share their work with us as well as the ACS and ADG for co-hosting. Special thanks to the South Australian Film Corporation who generously donated the hire of their screening theatre for the event.
'Good Luck To You, Leo Grande' is now available to rent on Apple TV, Google Play and Amazon Prime.
