Jill’s passion for the craft of editing is electric! I can not remember the first actual time I met Jill but I know she had been along side myself and others who created the first ASE Victorian committee in 1994 and that she was also a passionate editor.
To make life spicier, Jill’s career spans not only in industry but also in academia.
With a background in fine arts, Jill first worked in film as an Assistant Editor at Mike Reed Postproduction in Melbourne, then as a freelance editor spanning 20 plus years and still editing to this day, including short films, feature films, TV series and documentary.
Through all this she also started teaching short courses in Creative Editing at Open Channel, editing mentor/ Sessional Lecturer at VCA Film & Television, and at Swinburne University of Technology in Multimedia Design.
After completing a Master of Design (2005), Jill was employed as a full-time Lecturer and Program Coordinator of the newly reformed Swinburne School of Film and Television, subsequently Academic Leader and Course Director (2005-2017).
In her current role as a Senior Lecturer, her passion for editing extends into teaching postproduction from 1st year to 4th year of the Bachelor of Film and Television (Honours) program. In doing so, she has consulted on more than 350 graduate films and had the pleasure to work with many aspiring filmmakers and editors who are gainfully employed in the film industry today.
In undertaking a practice-led PhD (2015), Jill collaborated with a number of ASE friends and colleagues in creating an educational resource titled, The Art of Editing: Australian Screen Editors Discuss Creativity on Editing, published as a seven-part streaming series via ATOM.
Jill’s research extends to publishing papers on editing in peer-reviewed journals, as well continuing to work as an editor and documentary filmmaker on multicultural community-based and First Nations research projects.
As a long-time member and advocate, Jill continues to promote the ASE as a pathway to industry for her many talented graduate screen editors.
Working a long side Jill with some of the 4th year graduates, talking to directors, producers and her peers in her role as editor, the key words that they all mention is: Respected, highly regarded, passionate about film and a generous energetic warm person. This award is well deserved.
