One of the key aims for the Australian Screen Editors (ASE) is to foster and build a strong and resilient community. The sharing of knowledge is an essential part of professional development and the guild has run a successful Mentorship Program for many years. As we look to the future, we have redeveloped the Program to encourage and enable more of our members to participate, and to offer a simple structure so that everyone’s valuable time is used effectively.
The Mentorship Program is informal, but designed to be meaningful for both the Mentee and Mentor – with both set to benefit from the opportunity to reflect upon and develop what makes you a unique creative.
We want all members from different stages of their careers to engage as Mentors and Mentees. We have defined three core reasons for seeking mentorship and have created three pathways to cater to these different needs. They are:
- Advanced Craft – For established Editors and Assistant Editors to refine and develop their practice in a genre/format they already work in.
- Shift Focus – For established Editors and Assistant Editors who would like to shift from one genre/format or role to another (e.g. Series Drama to Feature Drama, Branded Content to Documentary, or Assistant Editor to Editor).
- Early Career – For emerging Editors and Assistant Editors who are starting their professional journey.
Within these pathways, Mentees will identify whether they would like to be mentored as an Assistant Editor or an Editor, and highlight a genre(s) they would like to focus on.
The Mentorship Program is an annual intake with an open call for both Mentors and Mentees. The program runs over 6 months from June to November. While we will endeavor to place everyone who applies there is no guarantee as this is subject to the availability of Mentors.
Applications close on the 19th April.
