Simon Price

Simon Price graduated from the VCA School of Film & TV in 1998. His graduate film TURANGAWAEWAE was awarded Most Daring & Innovative Production of the Year, and was also nominated for VCA Best Editing and Best Sound. TURANGAWAEWAEwent on to win an ATOM award in 1999.

Simon’s first feature film BLACKSPOT (dir Ben Hawker) awarded him Best Editing at the 2006 Rhode Island International Film Festival and since then he has continued to win major international attention for his work.

In 2010, his next feature film DESERT (dir Stephen Kang), premiered at the Pusan International Film Festival. In 2011 Simon edited THE ORATOR (dir Tusi Tamasese) which won three awards at the Venice Film Festival and Best Film at the 2012 NZ Film Awards and a nomination for Best Editing. Simon went onto edit the short film ELLEN IS LEAVING (dir Michelle Saville) which won Best Short Film at the 2013 SXSW and the 2013 San Francisco IFF.

His next major feature RUIN (dir / prod Amiel Courtin-Wilson & Michael Cody) in 2013 was awarded the Orrizonti Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival and Best Editing at the 2013 Asia-Pacific Film awards. RUIN was also in competition at the 2014 Sydney Film Festival alongside another of Simon’s feature edits, FELL (dir. Kasimir Burgess). The same year Simon edited and story edited the feature documentary ANTARCTICA: A YEAR ON ICE which was long listed for Best Documentary at the Academy Awards and nominated for Best Editing at the Milano IFF.

In 2014 Simon was accepted to attend the 2014 Biennale di Venezia – Biennale College Cinema – in Venice, Italy to develop his feature-length documentary project BE WILDEBEEST.

In 2015 Simon co-edited FREE IN DEED (dir Jake Mahaffy) which won Best Film at Venice IFF New Horizons section + was nominated for four Independent Spirit Awards including the John Cassevetes Award.

In 2016 Simon co-edited Season 1 of the ABC Indigenous sci-fi series CLEVERMAN (dir Wayne Blair & Leah Purcell) which was nominated for Best Television Drama Series at the 2016 AACTA Awards. Simon’s short edit SLAPPER (dir Luci Schroder) had its US premiere at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival in the International Narrative section. The film won at the 2016 Sydney Film Festival for Best Live Action Short.

In 2016 Simon also gave an EDITING MASTERCLASS at the Big Screen Symposium in Auckland, New Zealand, giving some insight into his editing process.

In 2017 Simon edited Kiku Ohe’s debut feature THE LINES which was awarded Best Narrative Feature Film at New York Film Week and continued to win awards for his commercial editing work.

In 2018 Simon co-edited three documentary features : "In My Blood It Runs" (dir. Maya Newell), "The Leunig Fragments" (dir. Kas Burgess) and "Martha ; A Life in Pictures" (dir. Selena Miles) which all had their Australian premieres at the 2019 Sydney Film Festival. All three films are also playing at MIFF 2019 and at selected international festivals.

In 2019 Simon won a GOLD craft award at the Australian advertising AWARD Awards for his editing of "Speights - The Dance" TVC (dir Steve Aysen) and co-edited Season Two of the US / Australian co-pro TV series "Mr In-Between" (dir. Nash Edgerton, prod Michelle Bennett, FX).

In 2020 Simon co-edited the Indian feature film "Fire In The Mountain" (dir Ajitpal Singh, JAR pictures) and is currently signed on to edit Rachel Perkin's documentary series "First Wars" (SBS) currently in production.

In addition, Simon is a founding member of ARC EDIT Australia and a published author of early cinema history. He has exhibited as a video artist in NZ, Australia, China, USA and Mexico. Simon currently holds a PG dip in Documentary Film from the VCA School of Film and TV, Melbourne, a BA hons in Film History from Otago University, NZ, and a Masters in Scriptwriting from the International Institute of Modern Letters.
